Need help getting addiction treatment?

  1. Inpatient young adult rehab: The most intensive form of addiction treatment on ASAM’s continuum of care, inpatient rehab programs for young adults are delivered in an intensive and residential environment. Your teen will remain on the campus-based site for the duration of treatment, benefiting from around-the-clock clinical and emotional care while participating in individual counseling, group therapy, therapeutic, educational, and holistic activities.
  2. Outpatient young adult rehab: A more flexible approach to young adult addiction treatment involves outpatient therapy at varying levels of intensity. A PHP (partial hospitalization program) is the most intensive form of teen rehab that involves 30 hours or more of weekly therapy sessions. An IOP (intensive outpatient program) is a less intensive form of outpatient teen rehab that involves 15 hours of weekly therapy sessions. Many teens step down to an outpatient program after completing a 30-day inpatient program for young adults.

A Day at an Inpatient Rehab Programs for Young Adults

Young adult rehab programs differ from traditional rehab programs by focusing on the specific needs of teens and young adults, but they provide access to the same services and treatments. The most effective rehab programs for young adults engage teens through empathy and activity.

If your teen has a severe addiction or a co-occurring mental health condition like ADHD, depression, or anxiety, they may benefit from the support and structure of inpatient rehab. What can your teen expect from a typical day in young adult rehab, then?

Morning

Wake-up time at young adult rehab is early, typically around 7am. After time to prepare for the day, your teen will eat a healthy breakfast with peers.

At around 9am, group therapy sessions begin. Experienced therapists and addiction specialists will lead sessions focusing on topics like coping mechanisms, addiction trigger management, and communication skills.

Before lunch, your teen may engage in individual counseling and CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) sessions.

Afternoon

Lunch is normally at midday. After lunch, young adults may engage in various recreational activities, such as:

  • Music therapy
  • Art therapy
  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Adventure therapy

Additional group therapy sessions in the afternoon may focus on topics like self-esteem and building healthy relationships.

Medication management also often occurs during the afternoons at young adult inpatient rehab.

Evening

Dinner is served in a communal setting at around 5pm.

After dinner, group sessions may include stress management and mindfulness techniques.

In some inpatient rehabs for young adults, there will be chance in the evening to attend support groups like 12-step meetings or SMART Recovery.

After some free time and the opportunity to prepare for the following days, lights out at 10pm should promote a restful sleep.

Best Treatments During Drug Rehab Programs for Young Adults

Drug rehab programs for young adults often use a combination of evidence-based treatments and holistic therapies. These include:

  • MAT (medication-assisted treatment): If your teen is addicted to alcohol or opioids, FDA-approved medications can alleviate cravings and withdrawal symptoms during detox. MAT may also be beneficial throughout ongoing teen adult rehab and is always most effective in combination with psychotherapy.
  • Psychotherapy: Psychotherapy is the clinical term for talk therapy. CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) is most commonly applied in young adult rehab to treat addictions and mental health conditions. CBT is also proven effective for treating co-occurring disorders.
  • Motivational therapies: Interventions like CM (contingency management) and MI (motivational interviewing) can be effective for treating stimulant use disorders in young adults.
  • Family therapy: Family therapy may help address issues that may be contributing to your teen’s substance abuse and may strengthen family relationships.
  • Holistic therapies: Holistic therapies like yoga, meditation, art therapy, equine therapy, and adventure therapy can all be beneficial supplementary treatments in young adults rehab.
  • Specialized counseling: Young adult rehab programs often provide specialized counseling to help teens cope with the challenges specific to this demographic.
  • Aftercare: The best young adult rehab programs will include ongoing support in the form of therapy, support groups, relapse prevention, and an alumni program.
