Drug & Alcohol PHP Rehab Programs

For some, leaving residential rehab can feel like a milestone, but for others, it can feel triggering due to the fear of losing progress. Thankfully, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHPs) make it easier to confidently transition back into daily life by bridging the gap between inpatient and outpatient care. PHPs offer the highest level of outpatient support, allowing individuals to receive structured guidance from medical professionals while returning home at night.

  • Eases the overwhelm of transitioning from inpatient care to everyday living.
  • Provides structured guidance and support to decrease the fear of relapse.
  • Balances intensive daytime therapy with the ability to live at home.
  • Bolsters coping skills for real-world settings through clinical expertise.

At Renaissance Recovery, part of the District Behavioral Health network, we provide a balanced path forward through our PHP. Through intensive, evidence-based treatment during the day, individuals gain the tools to navigate the outside world confidently and independently, without the need for overnight stays. This model ensures you remain connected to your community while receiving elite clinical care.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

A Partial Hospitalization Program rehab (PHP) is a level of outpatient addiction treatment designed for those requiring more support than traditional outpatient care, but do not need 24/7 supervision.

PHPs help to bridge the gap between inpatient and outpatient treatment, providing the next step toward returning to everyday life in sobriety. This way, clients can begin to start applying the tools and coping skills they’ve learned while still in a safe, structured environment. A PHP’s level of care also helps clients establish supportive relationships with treatment staff and other people in their recovery journey, which is a great foundation to lean on during long-term recovery.

What Treatments Does a PHP Offer?

PHPs offer evidence-based treatments that address the full spectrum of addiction, including mental health treatment, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), individual and group addiction therapy, & more. Learn more about each treatment type below:

Individual Counseling

Individual counseling offers one-on-one sessions with a therapist, helping clients overcome personal challenges, identify triggers, and develop coping skills. These sessions are tailored to meet the individual’s specific needs, fostering deeper self-awareness and promoting personal growth in recovery.

Group Therapy

Group therapy provides a supportive environment where clients can share experiences and learn from others facing similar challenges. This therapy setting helps promote a sense of community, reduces isolation, and encourages peer accountability. This helps clients build a strong support network for recovery.

Family Therapy

Family therapy involves loved ones in the recovery process, addressing family dynamics, and improving communication. It aims to strengthen relationships, educate family members about addiction, and provide tools for fostering a supportive environment for the client’s recovery.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps individuals recognize and change negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with addiction. By focusing on problem-solving and emotional regulation, CBT empowers clients to develop healthier coping strategies and make more positive choices in their daily lives.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT focuses on helping individuals regulate intense emotions, improve relationships, and manage stress through mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. It’s particularly effective for those struggling with addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions, providing tools for maintaining balance and reducing impulsivity.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Medication-assisted treatment (or medication management) involves the careful supervision of prescribed medications to support recovery, reduce cravings, and manage withdrawal symptoms. A medical professional works closely with the client to ensure medications are effectively integrated into the overall treatment plan.

Holistic Therapy

Holistic therapy addresses the mind, body, and spirit, integrating alternative treatments like yoga, meditation, and nutrition alongside traditional methods. This approach promotes overall well-being by helping clients reconnect with themselves, manage stress, and build healthy habits to support long-term recovery.

How Does PHP Work?

PHP works by helping to address addiction by providing a safe, stable, and intensive therapeutic environment for recovery. Following admission to a PHP program, clients get access to a one-on-one clinical counseling session where they are evaluated and provided with a customized treatment protocol.

From there, clients begin treatments for about 25-30 hours a week, Monday-Friday. This level of care allows for close monitoring and accountability, while also helping clients ease back into their regular lives as they return home in the evenings and on weekends.

Following PHP, next steps in the outpatient phase of addiction treatment include an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a traditional Outpatient Program (OP). As you progress through the outpatient levels of care, less time will be required during the week, allowing for more and more autonomy as you go through the final stages of addiction treatment.

How Effective Is a PHP?

A PHP provides evidence-based, proven effective treatment for addiction and significantly reduces the risk of relapse, especially combined in tandem with all levels of addiction treatment.

However, outcomes depend on a few factors, including:

  • The quality of the program: A quality PHP should address all aspects and root causes of addiction, including any underlying mental health issues. Programs should be accredited and offer customized treatment based on the individual. They should also provide a safe, clinical environment with experienced and credentialed staff who are committed to their clients’ success.
  • The individual’s commitment to recovery: Even in an excellent PHP program, outcomes may be affected if the individual receiving treatment isn’t committed to their recovery. While simply being in a treatment environment and establishing connections in a sober community can be enough to inspire action, not everyone is ready to commit to sobriety. This is an essential component in a successful treatment journey.

What Are the Benefits of PHPs?

The benefits of PHPs are numerous for those who require intensive treatment for drug addiction, alcohol addiction, and co-occurring mental health conditions. These programs help those struggling with addiction to achieve long-term sobriety while maintaining their independence. In addition to being a flexible, life-saving program for many, other benefits of a PHP include:

  • Comprehensive Care: PHP offers a full range of therapeutic services including individual, group, and family therapy without the need for 24/7 residential care.
  • Flexibility: Clients can live at home while receiving intensive treatment, balancing recovery with personal responsibilities.
  • Structured Support: Provides a highly structured environment that helps clients maintain focus on recovery.
  • Relapse Prevention: PHP programs include tools and strategies to manage triggers and prevent relapse.
  • Step-Down Care: Ideal for those transitioning from inpatient rehab or needing more support than traditional outpatient programs.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a PHP Program?

PHP programs are ideal for individuals who have completed detox and inpatient rehab and still need intensive care but do not require 24/7 supervision.

This program is intended as a transitional phase from inpatient to outpatient treatment, and is best suited for those with moderate to severe addiction or co-occurring mental health disorders who can still manage daily responsibilities. It provides an excellent blend of structure and independence for those at risk for relapse but are ready to start progressing in their recovery journey.
