UMR is a UnitedHealthcare TPA (third-party administrator). The company does not offer health insurance directly. Instead, UMR manages healthcare benefits on behalf of various U.S. employers, including alcohol rehab, drug rehab, and treatment for mental health conditions.

UMR rehab coverage meets large portions of the costs of addiction and mental health treatment, enabling more people to tackle these issues with reduced out-of-pocket expenses.

Does UMR Insurance Cover Rehab Treatment?

UMR is a third-party administrator. TPAs do not offer coverage for rehab services directly. That said, UMR rehab coverage is available through over 3,000 treatment providers across the United States. The ACA (Affordable Care Act) requires health insurance companies to provide the same coverage for addictions and mental health disorders as for medical conditions and surgical procedures.

The scope of UMR rehab coverage varies depending on the benefits package your employer has chosen. Plans administered by UMR cover most of the cost of treatment for addiction when it’s determined to be medically necessary and delivered by a healthcare provider approved by UMR.

The treatment provider submits the determination of clinical necessity to UMR for review and approval. Most UMR plans require prior authorization, especially for more intensive services such as inpatient or dual diagnosis treatment.

Types of Rehab Covered by UMR Insurance

UMR-administered healthcare plans usually include all services on the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s continuum of care that are considered clinically necessary for long-term recovery.

Services at drug or alcohol rehab covered by UMR often include:

  • Medical detoxification – Supervised medical detox helps those dependent on alcohol, drugs, or prescription medications withdraw from these substances safely and comfortably. Plans covered by UMR meet the costs of essential detox services.
  • Inpatient rehab – Inpatient treatment programs last 30 to 90 days, providing highly structured and immersive care for those with severe addictions and co-occurring mental health disorders. Services covered by UMR-administered plans include individual counseling, group therapy, family therapy, medication management, life skills training, and educational sessions.
  • PHPs (Partial Hospitalization Programs) – A PHP is an intensive day program that serves as a transition from inpatient rehab or as a standalone option for those who need structured treatment without requiring a residential stay. Partial hospitalization programs provide 30 hours or more of therapy sessions each week.
  • IOPs (Intensive Outpatient Programs) – An IOP involves up to 15 hours of weekly treatment sessions, with individuals returning home each evening.
  • Outpatient rehab – UMR coverage extends to ongoing outpatient sessions to help people transition from rehab to independent living. Sessions are held once or twice each week in an outpatient setting.
  • MAT (Medication-Assisted Treatment) – UMR rehab coverage may include MAT (medication-assisted treatment), blending FDA-approved drugs and behavioral therapies to manage opioid or alcohol addictions.

What Length of Treatment Does UMR Cover?

The duration of treatment covered by UMR-administered plans is based on clinical guidelines set out by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Most UMR-covered health insurance plans require ongoing documentation that treatment is both appropriate and clinically necessary, rather than imposing arbitrary time limits.

UMR Mental Health Coverage

UMR does cover therapy for mental health, despite not directly offering health insurance plans. As a TPA, UMR must provide equivalent coverage for mental health treatment as for other chronic medical conditions due to the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act. Coverage also extends to the treatment of dual diagnoses, which involves addressing co-occurring disorders.

How to Pay for What UMR Won’t Cover

UMR rehab coverage might not meet the entire cost of substance abuse or mental health treatment. Individuals must meet the deductible before coverage kicks in and must also make co-payments or co-insurance payments.

Many rehab centers offer monthly payment plans to help spread the cost of treatment. Ask the treatment providers on your shortlist if they make this provision.

An HSA (Health Savings Account) or FSA (Flexible Savings Account) allows you to meet medical expenses for substance abuse or mental health treatment using pre-tax income.

How to Verify Your UMR Insurance Coverage for Rehab

If you’re wondering, “What does my UMR insurance cover?”, call UMR customer service to clarify co-insurance, co-payments, deductibles, and other benefits.

Your Summary of Benefits and Coverage document details the extent of coverage available with your UMR plan for addiction and mental health treatment. You can learn more about your benefits and providers in the UMR network by visiting the UMR online portal.

Alternatively, reach out to your chosen treatment facility. Admissions teams can work with TPAs, such as UMR, to verify coverage and estimate out-of-pocket costs.

How do UMR Benefits Work?

UMR rehab coverage involves the TPA working with employers to create employees’ healthcare benefits. UMR is responsible for member services, processing claims, and maintaining a network of vetted treatment providers.

UMR works with healthcare providers nationwide. Rehab centers submit claims for the costs associated with treatment to UMR. Claims are processed in accordance with the plan’s limits and specifications.

UMR rehab coverage extends to treatment at in-network or out-of-network providers. Opting for in-network treatment results in reduced out-of-pocket expenses.

What is UMR Insurance?

UMR (United Medical Resources) is a TPA (third-party administrator) of healthcare benefits for employees. What does UMR stand for in practice, then? The organization connects employers, individuals, and healthcare providers, enabling those with addictions and mental health conditions to access treatment regardless of financial constraints.

UMR was founded to enable employers to streamline their healthcare costs and empower employees to access top-notch, evidence-based care. UMR processes claims and manages networks of treatment providers but does not underwrite insurance policies directly. Instead, they collaborate with health insurers like UHC (UnitedHealthcare) to deliver integrated healthcare solutions for organizations across the United States. Partners like UHC offer health insurance coverage, while UMR handles routine administrative tasks.
