David Harbour’s Addiction History

Harbour has shared his struggles with addiction during his youth. In interviews, he described heavy drinking in his early 20s, calling himself “the life of the party.” His alcohol dependency led to lost relationships, personal struggles, and nearly losing his place of residence. He even contemplated suicide, but concern for his cat prevented him from following through. Harbour reached out to a sober friend and began his recovery journey.

He acknowledged the toxic environment of his drinking days and expressed gratitude for the support he received. Harbour admitted to being a “terrible human being” while intoxicated and emphasized that sobriety helped him repair relationships. He embraced sobriety at 24 and has maintained it since.

David Harbour Mental Health Issues: The Complications of Co-occurring Disorders

A year after embracing sobriety, David Harbour was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. On the WTF podcast, he shared, “I was 25, and I did have a manic episode,” describing his experience and the period of institutionalization that followed. Harbour noted that his previous romanticized ideas of mental health hospitals contrasted sharply with the daily reality of the facility.

With support from his parents, he voluntarily admitted himself to a treatment facility, humorously remarking that the voluntary nature seemed to vanish upon entering. It took about a year for Harbour and his medical team to find an effective treatment approach. He highlighted acting as a stabilizing factor in his life. While continuing to use medications, he emphasized the benefits of psychoanalysis and noted the positive impact of fame on his recovery journey. Harbour also stressed the importance of stronger community support and empathy for those facing mental health challenges.

Rebirth and Ongoing Sobriety

During the Covid pandemic, Harbour found joy in his personal life. Since beginning their relationship in 2019, he moved in with Lily Allen and became involved in caring for her two daughters. In interviews, he expressed his affection and commitment as a stepfather and partner, which motivated the couple to marry.

While planning a private wedding, social media exposure altered their plans. They traveled to Las Vegas, obtained a marriage license, and the Clark County registry office shared the news on Twitter. Harbour humorously referenced the old saying, “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.”

With the news public, the couple shared wedding snapshots on Instagram. Harbour captioned one post, “In a ceremony officiated by the king himself, the people’s princess united with her devoted, humble, yet generous credit card holder, in a striking ceremony illuminated by the hazy skies emanating from a distant state engulfed in flames, all amidst a global pandemic.

David Harbour’s Mental Illness Advocacy

As a prominent public figure who has faced mental health challenges, David Harbour feels a responsibility to raise awareness and support others. In an interview on Fresh Air, he explained that following his success with Stranger Things, he was motivated to speak out, showing that individuals can maintain strength, success, and cultural influence while managing mental health conditions. Although he first revealed his bipolar diagnosis on the WTF podcast, Harbour had initially planned to share it at the 2017 SAG Awards, where he had prepared a speech but did not win.

Harbour told Esquire that his speech was aimed at children with mental health diagnoses and their parents, intending to reassure them that a diagnosis is not the end. He hopes his story inspires others, demonstrating that anyone can achieve their goals despite challenges. Reflecting on this, he said, “Either it gives them hope of achievement or, perhaps even better, makes a bit of a circus of the whole thing and takes the air out of either side of the equation.” Harbour continues to speak openly about his experiences, emphasizing that “we’re human. And we’re all a mess,” fostering empathy and understanding.
