Unfortunately, there is no cure for addiction. It is a life-long mental and physical illness that must be managed. The good news is that treatment for addiction is quite effective, and includes therapies like behavioral counseling and medication-assisted treatment

The CDC reports that “More than 1 in 10 adults (27.5 million) in the U.S. reported ever having a substance use problem, and, among those with a problem, nearly 75 % (20.5 million) reported being in recovery.”

Need help getting addiction treatment?

While there is no guarantee that someone will achieve long-term recovery, someone who wants to get sober and goes to rehab has a great chance of achieving recovery, even if they may need to go back more than once. Every visit to rehab drastically decreases the likelihood of relapse.

How Can Addiction Be Treated?

Addiction is the unhealthy use of any given substance. Whether it’s an addiction to drugs, gambling, shopping, or something even more obscure, addiction can pop up in many different facets of life, some more socially acceptable than others. Addiction affects over 30% of the US population and has many different faces. While all addictions are somewhat different, the treatment is often the same.

Addiction can be treated in a handful of ways. Often, an inpatient rehab program for addiction recovery is incredibly helpful. A person can leave their current life condition and seclude themselves to submerse in healing. They can learn a healthier way to live and act away from their triggers instead of reacting to life. In addition to inpatient programs, 12-step programs have been known to be very successful in aiding those struggling with addictions.

Most rehab programs offer a variety of treatment programs, and an addiction expert will conduct a screening to determine the right combination of treatments for each individual. Treatment options typically include:

While there is no pill to cure addiction, there are a number of methods, that in combination with one another, can create a more ideal condition for long-lasting sobriety. Much like high blood pressure, addiction can be managed.

Studies have shown that In the United States, 9.1%, or 22.35 million adults have resolved a substance use problem. The chances are significant that you or a loved one can get sober, and stay sober, with the proper help and treatment.

What is the Best Treatment for Addiction?

As far as addiction treatments, there are many different modalities implemented today. CBD (cognitive behavioral therapy) is likely the most common form of treatment for those suffering from addiction and mental health. Group therapy is also quite popular. In addition to these, a focus on 12-step recovery is widely used in the drug and alcohol arena of addiction.

One of the most important parts of addiction treatment is acknowledging the unhealthy behavior and then learning to pause and not act on it.

Beyond talk therapy and 12-step programs, medical treatment can help those with substance abuse issues. Detox can be one of the most physically trying times. In the first few days after a substance has been eliminated, many go through withdrawals. Withdrawals can be very uncomfortable. In an effort to help those who are struggling, Vivitrol and Suboxone are commonly used medications to ease withdrawal symptoms, and in fact, block the effect of the drug if the person uses it.

Management of addiction is multifaceted. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to addiction and its prolonged cure. Every person brings a different circumstance to the equation, therefore finding the right combination of medication, therapy, and implementation of a new lifestyle can take some time. Having a toolbox of recovery is paramount in navigating life’s stressors as they are what often lead to relapse. Whether it is knowing when to ask for help, or using reframing to overcome a stressful situation, having a recovery toolbox can make all the difference.

Often in cases of addiction, the person has tried many times to recover successfully. Relapse is part of recovery and often occurs when the person goes back into their daily regular life. This emphasizes how paramount having a large toolbox is when it comes to dealing with lifes struggles
