Adderall is a commonly prescribed drug that is used to help people with ADHD, unfortunately, the drug is often abused and sometimes requires an Adderall rehab to deal with this problem.

Adderall is a medication that doctors prescribe for people suffering from attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This medication works by providing the person with more clarity and focused thinking. It also increases mental alertness. However, even though it increases alertness, it doesn’t make the person with ADHD hyperactive. If the medication is abused or used by a person who doesn’t have a prescription, then it will cause them to have increased energy and feelings of self-confidence. These feelings can even be euphoric for some and addictive.

Need help getting addiction treatment?

If you are using this medication, you might wonder if you are addicted and need help. This question is a cause for concern when taking a medication that is addictive, like Adderall. It’s critical to understand the signs of Adderall addiction. Luckily, there are prescription drug rehabs like Renaissance Recovery’s California rehabs to help people who have been afflicted by the disease of addiction.

Signs of Adderall Addiction

Addiction to any drug almost always has both physical and psychological signs. Physical signs of addiction to Adderall include withdrawal symptoms after you abruptly stop taking the medication. These withdrawal signs could range from cravings to anxiety to sleepiness. You will notice that you generally feel uncomfortable and ill at ease when withdrawing from this medication.

Another sign of addiction to Adderall is having a psychological connection to the medication. This manifests itself in different ways in different people. Some people get into a routine doing the drug and feel upset emotionally if they try to stop. Others may feel an attachment to the feelings they get from the medication. These psychological connections are strong.

The last sign that you are likely addicted to Adderall is if you are abusing it. How can you abuse Adderall? Three ways that could qualify as abuse include:

  • Overusing the prescription you legally obtained (taking too many pills or taking them more frequently than you’re supposed to)
  • Using someone else’s medication or getting it another way (you don’t have a prescription)
  • Using Adderall to get “high” even though you don’t technically need it

Adderall Addiction Recovery

If you develop an addiction to Adderall, this is clinically described as stimulant use disorder. If you discontinue the use of this medication, intensely uncomfortable physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms will manifest. The onset, intensity, and duration of Adderall withdrawal depends on many variables, including:

  • Duration of Adderall abuse
  • Route of administration
  • Amount of Adderall taken
  • Co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Family history of substance abuse

Most people find that supervised medical detoxification at an Adderall detox center provides the safest and most comfortable springboard for ongoing Adderall addiction recovery.

Alternatively, you can gradually decrease your dosage of Adderall under the guidance of the prescribing physician. A tapered reduction in dosage will take from a few weeks to a few months, and this will mitigate most Adderall withdrawal symptoms.

Adderall addiction recovery is an ongoing chain of events rather than a single event like detox, though. Detox addresses the physical component of dependence. Engaging with inpatient or outpatient treatment will allow you to tackle the powerful psychological aspect of Adderall addiction.

Unlike treatment for opioid use disorder or alcohol use disorder, there are no medications approved by the FDA for treating Adderall addiction. Despite the lack of pharmacological interventions, Adderall addiction is nevertheless treatable.

While all Adderall addictions are unique, most treatment will follow a similar framework as follows:

  • Engage with a supervised medical detox
  • Gradually reduce dosage of Adderall to mitigate most withdrawal symptoms
  • Undergo a medical assessment and evaluation
  • Manage Adderall withdrawal symptoms while resisting the temptation of using the medication to alleviate symptoms
  • Engage with sessions of psychotherapy and behavioral therapy
  • Participate in individual and group counseling sessions
  • Develop a comprehensive aftercare and relapse prevention plan

Those with more severe Adderall addictions with the ability to take a month or more away from personal and professional commitments may benefit from inpatient rehab. Research shows that most mild and moderate addictions will respond positively to intensive outpatient treatment. This is our specialty here at Renaissance Recovery Center.

Finding Adderall Addiction Treatment

If you notice any of the signs of Adderall addiction or abuse, then Adderall rehab is your best option for help. At an Adderall rehab, you will safely go through the detox process with certified therapists and professional doctors monitoring your progress. Not only will you have medical staff overseeing your progress, but you will also participate in a comprehensive therapy program to root out any issues that could be lurking beneath the surface. For example, some people may require added therapy for unresolved problems from their past. Others may discover that they have addictive tendencies, which means they’ll need to be on guard for future addiction problems too.
